Understanding the Science of Addiction and Recovery

In recognition of National Recovery Month, join this live virtual session to learn about how addiction occurs and discover strategies for addressing the needs of residents with substance use disorders in nursing facilities. Participants will have the opportunity to hear from a panelist with lived experience as she shares her recovery journey and discusses the Twelve Steps of the Recovery Program.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Understand the science of addiction.
  2. Explore the complex needs of nursing home residents with substance use disorders (SUD).
  3. Learn strategies that nursing facility staff can use in working with residents with a SUD.
  4. Gain an awareness that recovery is possible from an individual with lived experiences in long-term recovery.
  5. Gain an understanding of the Twelve Steps Recovery Program.

Established by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), in partnership with the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS), the COE-NF offers Certified Medicare and Medicaid Nursing Facility Staff a centralized resource hub with easy access to trainings, technical assistance and additional resources, at no cost.

We help nursing facilities to improve the quality of life and care provided for residents who are experiencing a variety of behavioral health disorders, with a focus on Serious Mental Illness (SMI), Substance Use Disorder (SUD) and Co-Occurring Disorders (COD).
